Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, was used as a parlor trick for many years before its medical uses were discovered. It was found to be a safe, effective and easy treatment to help patients relax during their dental appointments while still remaining conscious. Since it is safe to use, it is often used for pediatric dentistry to help children relax as well.
Nitrous oxide is colorless and odorless and is administered through a mask over your nose at the beginning of your treatment. The gas will take effect as you breathe in normally, eventually giving you a “floating sensation” or sense of euphoria. Our dentist will be able to treat your teeth while you relax. Once the procedure is over, the mask is removed, and the nitrous oxide will wear off in a matter of minutes. You will be able to resume normal activities immediately, including driving yourself safely home.
